saw that Kiri and Sig were displaying the wee icon that shows they are using teamspeak or a.n. other voice chat program while logged in. this may be a really useful option in instances for agreeing tactics / giving direction. be interested what others think?

not something i have used before but after reading this

Thanks for bringing this up, Lir!

The icon you saw next to our character's portrait is the in-game voice turned on. While some people argue that it isn't of good quality my experience is that properly set up and with a good mic it's perfectly fine.

There are a number of reasons why most people feel that a 3rd party software is more convenient. In no particular order:
- You can leave the game's settings pretty much untouched allowing you to enjoy both the sounds/music of LOTRO and the chat within the party
- The independent software allows you to remain in the conversation while logging different characters/accounts (or even games)
- It does provide more options and overall better quality compared to LOTRO's built-in voice chat

However for hosting (maintaining a channel) you have to pay a monthly fee iirc.

Dadi has a number of good guides out there (and a webpage), they have good info and are very helpful.

I had a brief chat with J a couple of weeks back regarding same - I thought the reason the turtles skipped it was the immersion of RP. I am not really bothered to hear a 28 year old Dalish girl talk with the voice of a 56 years old, male chain smoker ( <-- just made all this up now ;D ) but others might differ.

Voice certainly is very useful for the reasons you outlined and it has the potential to reduce our reaction times by quite a bit.

My gaming group currently use Discord. In game chat is fine, we just use external software.. because well.. we all play different games.

We used voice once in game, its fine if everyone can at least listen. Obviously the leader needs to be able to talk.

Thing is, it is an all or nothing thing. We had one guy who never used it.. and it was always the case he never got instructions during raid.

It could be useful in instances. I'll probably won't be talking much (because of where the computer is in our apartment), but I'll be happy to hear the Scotsman bark his orders :)

I'm fine with in-game chat or an 3rd party solution, so long as it works on a mac. I use steam if that can be of any help.

One can listen without using headphones I think?

I really hate wearing headphones.

shall we try the in-game option next instance and see how it goes? i am assuming it works fine through speakers gwen. is there a mic mute/on button option to limit feedback/echo? similar issues to Bera wrt to speaking but lets face it i am not the one co-ordinating our strategies I am the one scrabbling around trying to follow ;P

How it went with the Voice Chat?

Should I enable it for next session?

It improved the experience (and the success rate) quite significantly while reduced time spent on comms - e.g. typing.

It is no harm enabling it in general. Its primary use will be to speed up comms and therefore reaction times in instances, though. But I'm also happy to listen to your songs if you've got a good voice 😉

I'd prefer to keep the voice chat confined to the tougher instances. I've played in groups that use it heavily before, in my experience it ends up in reducing immersion. From the elvish lady who has a basso profundo voice, the chit-chat about football and the utter uselessness of our politicians............there are a lot of risks there :)
